Neuwirtshaus is a settlement in Hanau , which belongs to the Großauheim district.

Geographical location

The settlement is on the former federal highway 8 between Hanau and Aschaffenburg , in the Middle Ages and early modern times the Birkenhainer Straße , which crossed the border between the county of Hanau-Münzenberg and Kurmainz . The Neuwirtshaus is just on the Großauheim area and thus in the former Kurmainzer area.

history

In 1693, Mathes Botzum from Bernbach built his first inn. He chose the location in the Kurmainzer area because taxes were lower here than in the neighboring county of Hanau . His son, Johann Botzum , built a second inn in 1713.

The location directly on the state border caused conflicts. A dispute between the county of Hanau and Kurmainz about which draft measure to use led to a precise demarcation in the disputed area, which in turn sparked a conflict over the location of the boundary stones. From 1806 to 1813 Napoleon claimed the Neuwirtshaus for himself in order to give it to his sister Pauline - along with others, such as Philippsruhe Castle .

Up until the 1960s, the two inns were heavily frequented, especially by residents from nearby Großauheim, and were often fully booked in the summer months.

Worth knowing

In ancient times, the Neuwirtshaus fort was located near today's Neuwirtshaus .
