The Nevado Condoriri (also simply Condoriri ) is at 5648  m the highest mountain in the Condoriri group in Bolivia .

history

Origin of the name

The name Condoriri is the Spanish spelling of the Aymara word Kunturi for condor . Together with the two neighboring peaks, the mountain resembles a condor with outspread wings. The Condoriri is the head of the condor ( Cabeza de Cóndor ), while the two secondary peaks form the left ( Ala Izquierda , 5532  m ) and the right wing ( Ala Derecha , 5482  m ).

First ascent

Wilfrid Kühm made the first ascent in April 1940 alone. He chose the route over the southwest ridge, which is now considered the normal route.

The direct route through the south face was first successfully climbed in 1973 by Angelo Gelmi, José Ferrari and Alain Mesili. In 1996 E. Monasterios and J. Ogden succeeded in direct ascent through the southeast face.

Location and surroundings

The Nevado Condoriri is located in the Cordillera Real in the east of the Condoriri Group north of the capital La Paz and belongs administratively to the Department of La Paz .

Routes to the summit

A base camp at around 4700  m at Laguna Chiar Khota is used to climb the Condoriri . It can be reached within a day from La Paz via the town of Tuni ( 4438  m ) and a subsequent three-hour hike past Lake Tunisee. To 5100  m height, a high bearing can be applied.

The normal route runs over the southwest ridge as a 55 ° steep combined ice / rock tour.
