Neville Whitehead

Neville Whitehead (* around 1946 ) is a New Zealand jazz musician ( double bass , bass guitar ) and musical instrument maker .

Whitehead was initially active in the Australian jazz scene, where he accompanied the Australian singer Maria Venuti with the Gus Merzi Trio and made recordings with the Charles Munro Quartet in 1967 .

He lived in Great Britain between 1969 and 1983. There he belonged to Elton Dean's quartet and briefly to Soft Machine . At the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1971 he accompanied Don Sugarcane Harris , but also Jean-Luc Ponty and Michał Urbaniak . He played with Gary Boyle at Caparius .

Whitehead was involved in 20 recordings between 1967 and 1976, including with Robert Wyatt , Neil Ardley , Bob Downes and Keith Tippett . He then worked as a musical instrument maker who specialized in double basses; since the 1980s he has had a workshop in Sydney, where he continues to be active in the jazz scene.
