Newark is a village in the southern part of the Town of Arcadia in Wayne County of New York State , about 50 km southeast of Rochester on the Erie Canal . It has around 9,000 inhabitants. The Village of Newark administrative unit includes some surrounding settlements, including the village of Arcadia, which gives the Town of Arcadia its name .

The village was founded in 1819 as Miller's Basin as a working settlement for the section of the Erie Canal in today's settlement area; the name comes from Captain Joseph Miller, who was the subcontractor responsible for this section. A few hundred meters away, the Lockville workers' settlement was established for another section of the canal around the same time . On July 21, 1853, the two settlements merged and constituted the administrative unit Village of Newark .
