Peter Newbrook

Peter AH Newbrook (born June 29, 1920 in Chester , United Kingdom , † June 29, 2009 in Norwich , Norfolk ) was a British cameraman and film producer with a single foray into film directing.

Live and act

Newbrook came straight from school in 1934 to film and began his career as a camera assistant at Warner Bros. / Teddington Studios and was involved in 1941 in the propaganda films Ship With Wings, The Blockade and Next of Kin . In 1947 Newbrook rose to become a simple cameraman (so-called camera operator ). In this capacity, Newbrook worked on eleven films between 1952 and 1957 for his famous colleague Jack Hildyard , including in 1956/57 on David Lean's monumental war film The Bridge on the Kwai . Newbrook was also involved in Lean's masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia as a simple cameraman (there under the direction of Freddie Young ) in 1961/62.

Then Newbrook got his first job as chief cameraman. The film productions supervised in this position were, however, much more modest, both in terms of budget and demands. His contributions to British horror films of the 1960s and early 1970s are particularly remembered. At the end of his career in 1972, Newbrook tried his hand at the only time as a director in the horror story Experiments . After a documentary about Greece published in 1975, Peter Newbrook retired from the film business.

From 1986 to 1988 Peter Newbrook was President of the British Society of Cinematographers . In the 2000s, he provided information about the celebrated star director in documentaries about David Lean.
