Newport is a city in the US state of Washington and the seat of the administration of Pend Oreille County .

geography

Geographical location

Newport is located at an elevation of 653 m (2,142  feet ) on the Pend Oreille River, which enters Washington state 0.8 km (approximately half a mile) north . The city is located on the very edge of the county and state bordering the US state of Idaho .

Newport has a humid continental climate . This shows wet and cold winters as well as warm and dry summers.

history

Before founding

After the establishment

Newport was officially incorporated on April 16, 1903 and was part of Stevens County prior to its formation . The mayor at the time was TJ Kelly. Newport became the official seat of Pend Oreille County, located in the northeast corner of Washington state, in 1911.

On July 14, 2015, an explosion occurred at Newport-based Zodiac Aerospace , which injured five people. Leaking chemicals required the official establishment of a 2000-foot safety distance and the use of a hazardous goods train (HAZMAT unit).
