Nhamatanda is a district of the Sofala Province in Mozambique with the capital Nhamatanda . The district is bordered to the north by the Gorongosa district , to the west by the Gondola district of Manica province , to the south by the Buzi district and to the east by the Dondo and Muanza districts .

The Pungwe River

geography

The district of Nhamatanda is 4014 square kilometers and has 254,683 inhabitants (as of 2013), which results in a population density of 63 people per square kilometer. Geomorphologically, Nhamatanda consists of two areas: the sedimentary basin of the Pungwe River with its tributaries in the east and a granite-gneiss plateau in the west. Besides the Pungwe, the main rivers are Mecuzi , Nhamatanda , Tsengudza , Nhamissenguere Metuchira , Mecuzi Manguena , Mítua , Mussicavo and Mutarara .

Accordingly, there are two types of climate in the district, tropical savannah climate in the east (Aw according to the effective climate classification ) and subtropical mountain climate in the west (Cw). Both areas have a rainy season, which lasts roughly from November to March, and a dry season. Both the amount and the distribution of precipitation vary widely. The average annual temperature is 24.9 degrees Celsius, the maximum and minimum annual mean values ​​are 32.0 and 17.8 degrees Celsius.

history

The area of ​​Nhamatanda was originally sparsely populated and unnamed. With the construction of the Sena railway line from Moatize to Beira by the English company TZR (Trans-Zambezia Railways), people from all over the country settled there. In 1980 Nhamatanda was promoted to district.

population

  • Age: The population is very young. 16.5 percent are under five years old, 29 percent are between five and fourteen years old (as of 2013).
  • Religion: Over sixty percent of the population are Christians ( Zionists , Evangelists, Catholics, Anglicans), about one percent are Muslims, and thirty percent do not profess any religion.
  • Language: The majority of the inhabitants speak Cisena (58%), many Ndau (also called Cindau or Chindau, 34%), only 4 percent have Portuguese as their mother tongue, 59 percent speak Portuguese.

Facilities and services

There are 138 primary schools ( Primárias) and eleven secondary schools (Secundárias) in the district. Of the primary schools, 96 are public and 42 are privately run schools; of the secondary schools, nine are public and two are private schools (as of 2013). Since 1996 there has been a vocational college in the capital Nhamatanda, specializing in agriculture, construction and teacher training.

In Nhamatanda there are twelve health centers and five public group practices (as of 2012).

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2007, 68 percent of households had a radio and 1.8 percent a television, 51 percent had a bicycle and 0.4 percent a car.

Agriculture

There are 44,189 farms in Nhamatanda (as of 2012). Of these, 28 are large farms with an average of 100 hectares, the other farms have an average size of one hectare. The main crops are sweet potatoes, corn, millet, cassava and beans. The most important domestic animals are chickens and ducks, cattle, children and pigs are mainly bred for marketing.

  • Road: The two most important roads in the district are the national road N1, which runs through the western part of the district from Inchope to Gorongosa, and the national road N6 , which comes from Beira through the capital Nhamatanda to Inchope and on to Chimoio and Mutarare . Both roads are paved.
  • Railroad: The Sena Railway runs through the district and runs from Beira to the Republic of Zimbabwe .
