Niall McVeigh (born October 5, 1990 ) is an Irish badminton player . He starts in Parabadminton in the starting class SH6 ( short stature ) in singles and doubles. McVeigh aims to participate in the 2020 Summer Paralympics .

Athletic career

Encouraged by his father, Niall McVeigh began playing badminton at the age of eight and joined a club when he was twelve. First, though swimming was his favorite sport and he hoped to participate in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing . An ear infection suffered in 2007 prevented participation and ultimately forced McVeigh to give up swimming as a competitive sport.

In the European Badminton Championships for the disabled in 2008 in Dortmund McVeigh title winner was in singles. He finished the Badminton World Championship for the disabled in Guatemala City as world champion in singles. In 2012 he won bronze in mixed singles with Milena Hoffmann in Dortmund in addition to the European championship . In the same place, he won the individual world title again the following year. In 2014 he and his partner Alexander Mekhdiev won the double competition of the EM in Murcia . In the singles final he was defeated by the Englishman Andrew Martin . At the European Championships in Beek 2016, he was again silver in the singles after a defeat against the Englishman Krysten Coombs . In Ulsan , South Korea , it was only enough for bronze in mixed at the 2017 World Cup, McVeigh lost in the semifinals with Peruvian Carmen Giuliana Póveda Flores to the French-English duo Fabien Morat and Rebecca Bedford .
