Rafael Grossi
Rafael Mariano Grossi (* 1961 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine diplomat . He has been Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since December 3, 2019 .
Life
Grossi studied Political Science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (1983) and International Relations at the University Institute for International Studies and Development in Geneva (1991). There he also received his doctorate in history and international politics.
In 1985 he joined the Argentine diplomatic service and initially worked in the Department of Nuclear Affairs and Disarmament. From 1998 to 2002 he was head of the office of the Argentine embassy in Brussels , represented Argentina from 1998 to 2001 at NATO , and from 2002 to 2007 he was the head of cabinet of the director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague . He then worked as a special advisor to the Argentine space agency Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales and the Ministry of Regional Planning and Investment, and from 2008 also as Director General for Political Affairs in the office of the Argentine Foreign Minister.
From 2010 to 2013 he was Deputy Director General and Head of Cabinet of the Director General of the IAEA before being appointed Ambassador of Argentina to Austria and permanent representative to the IAEA and other international organizations based in Vienna . From 2014 to 2016 Grossi was President of the Nuclear Suppliers Group .
On August 2, 2019, Grossi was presented as the Argentine candidate for the office of Director General of the IAEA. He competed against Lassina Zerbo ( Burkina Faso ), the acting general manager Cornel Feruta ( Romania ) and Marta Žiaková ( Slovakia ). In the first ballot, on October 28, 2019, none of the candidates received the necessary two-thirds majority on the Board of Governors. The following day, however, Grossi was able to unite 24 of the 23 votes required in the second ballot and thus prevailed against Feruta (10 votes). His appointment by the Board of Governors on October 30, 2019 was unanimously confirmed by the General Conference in a special meeting on December 2, 2019. He took office on December 3, 2019.
Grossi is married and has eight children.
