Marta Žiaková (born November 23, 1955 in Handlová ) is a Slovak civil servant, diplomat and scientist in the field of nuclear energy . Since 2002 she has been the chairman of the Nuclear Safety Authority of the Slovak Republic ( Úrad jadrového dozoru SR , ÚJD SR). She ran for the post of Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2019 .

Life

Marta Žiaková was born on November 23, 1955 in Handlová in what was then Czechoslovakia . From 1974–1979 she studied at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (specialization technical cybernetics - automation technology ). In 1984 she did her doctorate in technical cybernetics at the same university.

From 1984 she worked at the Research Institute for Nuclear Energy (VUJE) in Trnava . Between 1995 and 2002, Žiaková held several managerial positions in the training center for the preparation of nuclear personnel of the VUJE in Trnava - there she managed several projects.

At the same time, she worked as an expert for the IAEA in Vienna for the training of personnel in the context of technical cooperation projects, for example in Hungary , Ukraine , Iran and the United States . She is regularly invited as an expert for the working groups of the IAEA and is a member of the Slovak Nuclear Society.

On March 28, 2002, at the suggestion of the Slovak Minister of Economics, Ľubomír Harach , she was appointed chairman of the Slovak nuclear supervisory authority by the Slovak government, succeeding Miroslav Lipár . She is the longest-serving chairman of ÚJD SR in the history of Slovakia, having served in seven different governments.

Marta Žiaková represented Slovakia in various international forums as the chairwoman of ÚJD SR. From 2004 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2015 she was a member of the Board of Governors of the IAEA, where she chaired the body from 2014 to 2015. She then served as President of the 62nd IAEA General Conference in 2018. In addition, she was a member of the International Group on Nuclear Safety (INSAG) from 2012 to 2016.

In March 2019, Žiaková was appointed Chair of the European Group of Nuclear Safety Regulators (ENSREG), having been a member of it since 2007. In the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD , Žiaková has been deputy chairwoman since 2011 and has been chairwoman of the OECD NEA Steering Committee for Nuclear Energy since 2016.

On September 5, 2019, the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Žiaková's candidacy for the post of Director General of the IAEA. She competed against three candidates from Argentina ( Rafael Grossi ), Burkina Faso ( Lassina Zerbo ) and Romania ( Cornel Feruta ). In a first trial vote by the IAEA Board of Governors on October 10, 2019, however, Žiaková received no votes and subsequently withdrew her candidacy.
