Niaz Ahmed Naik

Niaz Ahmed Naik (born May 31, 1926 - August 6, 2009 in Islamabad ) was a Pakistani diplomat .

Life

He was a Masters from Punjab University and entered the foreign service in September 1949. From 1951 to 1955 he was employed in Sydney. From 1955 to 1959 he was employed in New York City. From 1960 to 1963 he was employed in Rangoon . From 1963 to 1965 he was employed in Bad Godesberg . From 1965 to 1967 he was employed in Geneva . From 1967 to 1970 he was Director General at the United Nations. Niaz Ahmed Naik headed the Pakistani Mission at the United Nations Office in Geneva from 1971 to 1974 . From 1974 to 1978 he was Additional Secretary at the United Nations. From 1978 to 1982 he headed the Pakistani mission at the UN headquarters . From July 11, 1982 to May 30, 1986 he was State Secretary in the Pakistani Foreign Ministry. From 1986 to 1990 he was ambassador to Paris and representative of the Pakistani government to UNESCO . From September 1988 to 1989 he was ambassador to New Delhi.

He was considered one of the architects of the conflict resolution of the Kargil War in May June 1999. Naik was found dead in his apartment. A broken lower jaw, broken ribs and trauma to the lungs and liver were found on the body that was dead for two to three days at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) . A spokesman for the PIMS did not rule out murder as the cause of death, but said that preliminary medical examinations had raised doubts about murder after torture.
