Nicholas Eveleigh

Nicholas Eveleigh (born around 1748 in Charleston , Province of South Carolina , †  April 16, 1791 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1781 and 1782 he was a delegate for South Carolina in the Continental Congress .

Life

Around 1755 Nicholas Eveleigh moved with his parents to Bristol , England , where he completed his schooling. He did not return to Charleston until 1774. He joined the revolutionary movement and served in the Continental Army until 1778 , where he rose to the rank of colonel. After that he worked in agriculture on his plantation. In 1781 he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. This sent him to the Continental Congress, where he represented his state between 1781 and 1782. In 1782 he was elected to the State Council of South Carolina, which later became the State Senate . In 1789 he became an auditor for the US Treasury Department , then located in Philadelphia. He held this office until his death on April 16, 1791.
