William Fitzhugh

William Fitzhugh (born August 24, 1741 in King George County , Colony of Virginia , † June 6, 1809 in Fairfax , Virginia ) was an American politician . In 1779 he was a delegate for Virginia to the Continental Congress .

Career

William Fitzhugh was homeschooled by private tutors. He then worked in agriculture. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. He served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1776 and 1777, and also served in 1780, 1781, 1787, and 1788. In 1779 he represented his state in the Continental Congress. He then sat in the Virginia Senate between 1781 and 1785 . He died in Fairfax on June 6, 1809.

William Fitzhugh was friends with George Washington , who mentioned him in his diary. He was the last person to visit Washington outside of Mount Vernon before his death . In 1804, his daughter George Washington married Parke Custis , the step-grandson and adopted son of Washington. Their daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee, married the future Confederate General , Robert E. Lee, in 1831 .
