Epitaph by Niclas Keisjer in the parish church of St. Martin in Cochem

Niclas Keisjer ( Kayser the Elder ) (* around 1481 in Cochem ; † April 6, 1569 there ) was a waiter from the Electorate of Trier and bailiff .

Life

Niclas Keisjer served as an imperial captain during the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 . Subsequently he was electoral waiter in Ulmen for 5 years and until 1557 electoral trier bailiff in Cochem. An epitaph preserved by him in the old choir in the Cochem parish church of St. Martin shows Keisjer in a life-size representation.

The portrait-like ornate tombstone epitaph by Nicolas Keisjer is about 1.85 m tall, made of gray sandstone and coated with a thick layer of oil paint. During the renovation in 1997, the dispersion and oil paints were removed and a limestone glaze was applied instead.

In the depiction, Keisjer is shown in his splendid armor with chain mail, smooth chest, shoulder and leg armor, as well as harem pants. His helmet is at his feet, his originally folded hands have been lost and the civil coat of arms is depicted in the upper gable. In the upper arched frieze an inscription was made, which contains the following text.

Arched frieze with inscription
