Nicolaas van der Waay (born October 15, 1855 in Amsterdam , † December 18, 1936 there ) was a Dutch watercolorist , decorative painter and draftsman .

Among other things, he painted the golden body of the Dutch royal family with allegorical representations and drew the portrait of the young Queen Wilhelmina for postage stamps and coins . Furthermore, his subjects include genre painting , landscapes, portraits, historical images, especially the history of the city.

education

Van der Waay received his first drawing lessons from LJH Koopman, whose daughter he later married. He studied in Amsterdam at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten from 1871 to 1875. He was the only one to compete for the Prix ​​de Rome in 1883 , but unsuccessful due to a lack of competition. August Allebé made sure that he received a ministerial grant of 1000 guilders for a study trip to Italy .

His stay in Italy lasted from April 3, 1884 to October 26, 1884. He visited Rome , Florence and Venice . Then he returned to Amsterdam. From 1891 he held a professorship at the above-mentioned Rijksakademie , succeeding Professor Wijnveld, until his retirement in 1927.
