Nicolas Brûlart de Sillery ( December 17, 1544 - October 1, 1624 ) was a French diplomat , seal keeper , statesman and chancellor of France .

Life

On May 30, 1573 Brûlart became a member of the parliament in Paris , from December 18, 1584 he presided over the Chambre des enquêtes and after the death of Jean Le Maistre he presided over the parliament of Paris from February 24, 1597 . On April 1, 1587 he took over the diplomatic representation at the Three Leagues and was from July 15, 1587 to July 1595 was ambassador at the Old Confederation . During this time he urged Bern to go to war against Savoy and successfully demanded the repeal of the peace that had been decided on October 1, 1589 in Nyon . Under Heinrich von Navarra negotiated again with the Swiss and the Grisons in 1595 and 1602 respectively.

From September 5, 1601 to March 26, 1602, Brûlart was active as envoy extraordinary and contributed significantly to the renewal of the alliance with France, which was decided on January 29, 1602 in Solothurn . In 1604 he was appointed Minister of Justice of France, in 1605 as Chancellor of the Kingdom of Navarre and in 1607 as Chancellor of France , where he succeeded Pomponne de Bellièvre . Under Louis XIII. of France he was from January 23, 1623 to January 2, 1624 in addition to Chancellor of France and keeper of the seal of the empire, which he could carry out actions for the government.

Brûlart married Claude Prudhomme on November 24, 1574. From this marriage came two sons, including Pierre Brûlart de Sillery , and five daughters. His grave was in the crypt of the Church of St. Rémi in Marines until 1793 .
