Nicolas Buendia

Nicolas Buendia (born March 12, 1879 in Malolos , Bulacan , † after 1949 ) was a Filipino politician who was a member of parliament and senator for several years .

Life

Buendia first attended the grammar school in Malolos, founded by the later Minister of the Interior, Governor of Bulacan and Senator Teodoro Sandiko , and then studied at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and the Liceo de Manila , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts . During the Philippine Revolution against Spain between 1896 and 1898 he served in the Revolutionary Army and was last promoted to first lieutenant .

After the Philippines became a US overseas property after the Spanish-American War in 1898 , Buendia was successively local secretary, member of the local council and, most recently, mayor of Malolos. As a supporter of Gregorio Aglipay , he was one of the founders of the Independent Philippine Church in 1902 . During his communal work in Malolos, he completed a law degree and was admitted to the bar in 1910 by the Philippine Bar .

In 1916 Buendia was elected Governor of Bulacan to succeed Trinidad Icasiano and held this position until he was replaced by Jun B. Carlos in 1919. He then took up his legal practice.

After the Philippine Independence Act came into force , Buendia was elected delegate to the Constituent Assembly ( Constitutional Convention ) in 1934 and represented the constituency of Bulacan I there . In November 1935 he was elected a member of the Commonwealth Congress ( Pambansang Asamblea ng Pilipinas ) in the constituency of Bulacan I and was a member of this until November 1941.

In 1941, Buendia was elected a member of the Senate for the first time as a candidate for the Nationalist Party and was a member of it until 1949.
