Liez was born in 1809 as the son of a French cobbler and a Luxembourger in Neufchâteau, France, in the Vosges Mountains . In 1812 he came to Luxembourg with his family as a child, and in 1814 his father took Luxembourg citizenship. From 1825 he attended the Luxembourg drawing school and learned from Jean-Baptiste Fresez . From 1827 to 1830 he studied in Charleroi and attended the Académie des Beaux Arts in Mons , where he worked intensively with lithography . From the mid-1830s he worked as a lithographer in Luxembourg. From September 1837 to 1851 he was employed as a copper engraver in the Septfontaines ceramic factory . After 1851 Liez ran a lithography institute. In 1866 he bought a pottery in Audun-le-Tiche , which he had to give up in 1870. Liez became artistic director of the Villeroy & Boch stoneware factory in Dresden. Many of his drawings are reproduced on picture plates from the Boch family's ceramic workshops.

Liez was best known for his views of Luxembourg and the Saarland.
