Nicolas de Grigny

Nicolas de Grigny (baptized September 8, 1672 in Reims ; † November 30, 1703 there ) was a French organist and composer .

Life

Nicolas de Grigny came from a family of organists. From 1693 to 1695 he was the organist at the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis near Paris, where he is said to have been taught by Nicolas Lebègue . After his marriage in 1695, de Grigny moved back to Reims, where he worked as an organist until the end of his life.

The Livre d'orgue (“Organ Book”) has been preserved from his works . Consisting of two parts, the first comprises an organ mass , the second five hymns , including the Veni, Creator Spiritus .

Johann Gottfried Walther and especially Johann Sebastian Bach were admirers of the young de Grigny. Handwritten copies of his organ book have been preserved from both of them.
