Nicolaus Wendelin Schmidt

Nikolaus Wendelin Schmidt , (born May 20, 1883 in Mühlheim am Main ( Hesse ), † September 17, 1954 in Berlin-Lichterfelde ) was a German sculptor . He received the Rome Prize in 1913 . He was married to the artist Johanna Helene Charlotte Schröder, called Hannes Petersen .

biography

Schmidt studied with Professor Breuer at the Royal Academic University for the Fine Arts in Berlin. As a student he won prizes. At the age of 20 he was one of the first to win the Rome Prize (1913), which was combined with a one-year study trip to France and Italy and a stay at the Villa Massimo (1913/14) in Rome. His strength lay in portraits and life-size sculptures. About 100 are detectable, but more were definitely made, some of them are in museums (e.g. small sculptures in the former Museum for Physical Education in Berlin) or the majority are privately owned. He also made numerous drawings and etchings.

Exhibitions

Schmidt designed several exhibitions, beginning before the First World War up to the end of the 1940s a. a. Great Berlin art exhibition in 1916.
