Nicotiana arentsii is a species of tobacco ( Nicotiana ).

features

Nicotiana arentsii is a vigorous annual or short-lived perennial plant . It forms an upright stem axis from which several rigid, ascending branches extend. On juvenile plants, the stem axis is often reddish-purple and covered with conspicuous, weak, short, silvery trichomes . With age, the stem axis becomes bald and becomes thinly corky and lignified inside.

The protruding leaves are finely to conspicuously tomentose, round-egg-shaped or almost heart-shaped, tapering towards the front or pointed. The leaf blades reach a length of 10 to 25 cm, the leaf stalks are less than half as long.

The panicle-shaped inflorescences are accompanied in the lower part by reduced leaves, in the upper part by lanceolate bracts . The well-developed rachis branches out several times. The flower stalks are 2 to 6 mm long. The calyx is 10 to 14 cm long and hairy, broadly cylindrical or almost bell-shaped. The calyx lobes are triangular-ovoid in shape and are shorter than the calyx tube. The crown to the coronary hem 16 to 20 mm long and slightly asymmetrical. A corolla tube 4 to 5 mm long and 3 mm wide is followed by a corolla throat about three times as long and 2.5 times as wide, which is inversely conical to club-shaped. The coronet is 5 to 9 mm wide and has wide, slightly pointed to pointed tips. The corolla tube and the crown throat are pale green-yellow in color and covered with short whitish trichomes, the coronet is dirty straw-colored and hairy on the outside. One of the five stamens is curved in an S-shape, shorter and less hairy than the remaining four.

The fruit is an elliptical, egg-shaped capsule on which the large calyx lobes are smooth or almost smooth. The seeds are broadly elliptical, 0.6 to 0.8 mm long and dark brown.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The species is native to Peru and Bolivia.

Systematics and Etymology

The species is classified within the genus Nicotiana in the section Undulatae . The species allotetraploid originated from Nicotiana undulata .

The kind epithet honors George Arents .
