Niels Verner Baunsøe

Niels Verner Baunsøe (born June 29, 1936 in Frederiksberg ; † March 12, 2012 ) was a Danish cyclist .

Athletic career

At the age of 18 he made it to the highest Danish amateur class. Baunsøe, who started for the club ABC Copenhagen, won three titles in the Nordic championships in cycling ; In 1957 he won the road race of juniors ahead of compatriot Svend Pedersen, 1957 and 1959, he won with the Danish foursome in the team time trial . He was also runner-up in the 1957 road race of the Danish amateurs behind Eluf Daalgard . In 1959 he won the Sachsenring race in the GDR , which was considered the dress rehearsal for the UCI road world championships in 1960 . On the track he was second in the championship for the single pursuit , in 1960 and 1961 he won the bronze medal. Baunsøe competed several times in the UCI Road World Championships. He was a member of the street foursome at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome when his teammate Knud Enemark Jensen collapsed on the track and died shortly afterwards. He then renounced his intended starts in the Olympic track competitions.

In 1965 he drove the International Peace Tour , but retired after a fall. In the meantime he was a professional driver from 1960 to 1962, among others with contracts in Belgian and French racing teams. He contested six-day races in Berlin and Copenhagen , but without occupying front places. Baunsøe was disaffected by professional cycling and became an amateur again in 1964 . At the end of the 1965 season he ended his career.
