Nieuw Wereldtijdschrift

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nieuw Wereldtijdschrift (New World Magazine) or NWT for short was a Flemish literary magazine that appeared from 1984 to 1997 and from 1998 to 2000. It was the successor to the Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift (NVT) (New Flemish Magazine).

History of the magazine

Initially, the magazine was compiled by Herman de Coninck , Piet Piryns en Hugo Claus . Hugo Claus soon left the project, Herman de Coninck became the main editor and her formative figure.

The orientation of the NWT was left-progressive, it wanted to offer readers a mixture of literature and journalism , similar to what de Coninck had got to know with the magazine Humo . It was initially planned to be published weekly. However, since it only had 3,000 readers, the magazine was only published every two months.

The magazine was an innovative magazine with over 500 pages annually, which stood for its own style and interpretation. De Coninck succeeded through his connections to the modern writers of his time and from the many submissions that the paper received, to put together a literarily valuable mix of contributions. Among other things, stories by Flemish and foreign writers were published. Essays were given a lot of space, for example by Bruno Bettelheim on ghetto thinking , Rudy Laermans on the kitsch of pop music , Jane Smiley on marriage, sex and capitalism , Piet Meeuse on the letters from Marcel Duchamp and Vargas Llosa on his participation in the Peruvian presidential elections.

After de Coninck's sudden death in 1997, a double issue was published in his memory. After that, the magazine continued to appear in a modified form for four years as a monthly supplement to the De Morgen newspaper , mainly with the same editors and with articles by de Coninck's widow, Kristien Hemmerechts , before it had to be completely discontinued in 2000. Employees during this time included Bernard Dewulf , Frank Albers , Bart Moeyaert (column), Marc Reynebeau and Johan Clijsters (draftsman).

Quotes

  • Small revolution. ' (Hugo Brems, 1997)
  • Small revolution. In the thirteen years of its existence, De Coninck initiated a small revolution with NWT in Flanders. “The appearance of the paper has fundamentally changed the public image of literature: undogmatic, eclectic, not averse to fashion and topicality, averse to inbreeding and brooding, intelligent without being intellectualistic. She got literature out of the ghetto. " (Hugo Brems, 1997)
