Bernard Dewulf

Bernard Dewulf (born January 30, 1960 in Brussels ) is a Flemish poet , essayist , columnist , journalist , dramaturge and art connoisseur.

Bernard Dewulf studied German Philology and works as a journalist.

poet

Dewulf published his first poems in various literary magazines in the 1980s. In 1987, Twist met ons appeared , an anthology by several authors (Dirk van Bastelaere, Charles Ducal and Erik Spinoy), in which he was represented with nine poems. This collection of poems achieved the status of a manifesto in the poetic history of Flanders, because the postmodern generation of the young poets represented here was loud and challenging in confrontation with the complacency and mediocrity of Flemish poetry up until then. Dewulf's first own volume of poetry Waar de egel gaat was published in 1995, a second, Blauwziek , twelve years later, in 2007.

Editor and columnist

Dewulf worked with Frank Albers from 1998 to 2000 as main editor of the magazine Nieuw Wereldtijdschrift and later as a columnist for De Morgen (front page). For many years he was responsible for the culture and book supplement Café des Arts for De Morgen . In 2009 Dewulf was dismissed from the newspaper De Morgen along with twelve other employees for reasons of rationalization . He is currently a columnist for the weekly magazine of the Belgian newspaper De Standaard and an employee of the Dutch evening newspaper NRC Handelsblad . In 2006 a selection of Dewulf's columns was published under the title Loerhoek .

Essayist, art connoisseur, novelist

The essay collection Bijlichtingen: kijken naar schilders was published in 2001 . This book contains reflections (cheering) on ​​visual artists. A second collection of essays followed in Naderingen. Kijken en zoeken naar schilders (2007) with texts on plastic art . Dewulf published further collections of essays and art studies in 2012 and 2014.

For the novella Kleine Dagen (2008) he received the renowned Libris Literature Prize in 2010 and the Inktaap the following year .

City poet

From January 2012 to January 2014 Dewulf was the official city poet (stadsdichter) of Antwerp .

Dramaturge and translator

Dewulf transferred in 2006 for the theater company De Roovers that of Ted Hughes edited classical drama Alcestis of Euripides into Flemish. In 2009 the artistic director of the city theater in Ghent asked him if he wanted to work as a dramaturge for the theater company NTGent , and Dewulf agreed. In 2011, NTGent brought the play The bitter tears of Petra von Kant by Rainer Werner Fassbinder to the stage in a translation by Dewulf . In October 2012 the play Een lolita premiered , which Dewulf wrote at the request of director Julie Van den Berghe (NTGent) and which is based in small parts on the scandalous novel Lolita (1955) by Vladimir Nabokov . Dewulf reworked his novella Kleine Dagen for a theatrical reading . Accompanied by video images, music and drawings, Dewulf will perform his work on stage in 2012/2013 and also in 2016.
