Nigel is a city in South Africa . It belongs to the Gauteng Province and is located in the metropolitan municipality of Ekurhuleni , which was previously known in a similar location as East Rand . In 2011, Nigel had 38,318 residents.
Surname
When gold was discovered in what is now the town of Nigel , the then landowner sold his farm. He is said to have read the book The Fortunes of Nigel (German: "Nigels Schicksale") by Walter Scott . The company was called the Nigel Gold Mining Company . The city was then also called Nigel.
Geographical location
The city is 1570 meters above sea level. Nigel is on the southeast edge of the Witwatersrands . The city of Springs is to the north and the city of Heidelberg to the south .
history
In 1886 gold was discovered on the Varkensfontein farm . Until 1923 Nigel was a small mining settlement. In 1923 it became a village and in 1930 it was granted city rights . In the 1930s, Nigel developed particularly quickly. The Sub Nigel Gold Mine was the world's most profitable gold mine at the time. In 1935 Nigel was connected to the Springs – Heidelberg railway line.
In 2000, Nigel became part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality .

Today the city's main sources of income are mining and several heavy industry operations .
