Night Passage is an album released in 1980 by Weather Report .
General
The first seven tracks were recorded live in Los Angeles in August 1980 in front of 250 listeners who can be heard on some recordings. Madagascar was recorded live in Osaka in June 1980 . Percussionist Robert Thomas Jr. is in the band for the first time. The album is less elaborately produced than its studio predecessor Mr. Gone and does not use overdubs .
Joe Zawinul called it "one of my favorite albums in the band".
About the title track Pastorius said:
“He [Zawinul] sent me my grades in the mail and I had to study them. It's a difficult part. It took me a week. "

reception
Richard S. Ginell gave the album four out of five stars, but also expressed criticism:
“The fault of this album is the lack of memorable compositions; it is more of a vehicle for virtuoso feats. [...] Port of Entry is a tour de force for Jaco, who overwhelms with incredibly fast, pointed runs that posthumously made him a legend. "
