The Night of Light was a nationwide event by the event industry as part of the protests during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany . It took place on June 22nd and 23rd, 2020 in numerous locations.

description

During the Night of Light , around 9,000 important buildings in Germany were illuminated with red light at night from 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The campaign was intended to draw attention to the financial plight of the event industry due to the economic crisis in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic . The initiator of the campaign was Tom Koperek as the operator of an event hall on the premises of the Zeche Zollverein in Essen . Subscribed, according to the organizers about 8,000 companies, such as venues , organizers, event agencies, exhibition companies , stand builders , caterers , technical service, Dekofirmen and individual entrepreneurs.

The aim of the campaign was to talk to politicians in order to prevent a massive wave of bankruptcies and to preserve several hundred thousand jobs nationwide. The color red used in the action should express the following:

Red lighting on the old market in Unna
Red illuminated New Town Hall in Hanover
  • The event industry is on the “red list” of the dying industries
  • Red alert - a billion dollar market and hundreds of thousands of jobs are at risk
  • The event industry is a community and has the common goal of an industry dialogue with politics
  • A fiery appeal to the public
  • The color red stands for the passion in the professions in the industry

According to the Association for Media and Event Technology (VPLT), which supported the campaign, since March 10, 2020, the orders for lighting engineers , sound engineers and stage builders have almost completely collapsed. The association put the annual turnover of the event industry in Germany at 130 billion euros. For example, the branch in Lower Saxony is one of the ten most important employers in the state.

The public response to the campaign was low to divided, because on the one hand there were hardly any people around at the chosen time to be able to notice the action, and on the other hand because red lighting ( red light district ) traditionally has negative connotations. After the Night of Light was held , the initiator Tom Koperek announced further actions in the event industry to increase the pressure on politicians to act.
