The Denka Big Swan Stadium ( Japanese. デ ン カ ビ ッ グ ス ワ ン ス タ ジ ア ム , Denka Biggu Suwan Sutajiamu ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Japanese city of Niigata in the prefecture of the same name . It is also known by its nickname Big Swan (Japanese ビ ッ グ ス ワ ン , Biggu Suwan ). The main user of the stadium is the Albirex Niigata football club , which plays its home games in the J. League Division 1 here.
history
The facility was built on the occasion of the 2002 World Cup as Niigata Stadium (Japanese 新潟 ス タ ジ ア ム , Niigata Sutajiamu ) and completed in March 2001. The construction costs were 269 million euros . It currently offers space for 42,300 spectators. The energy supplier Tōhoku Denryoku , based in Sendai , gave the sports facility its name in 2007. In early 2013, the Tokyo chemical company Denki Kagaku Kōgyō acquired the naming rights to the stadium.

Events
In addition to football, other sporting events take place in the Big Swan . The rugby union match Japan against Hong Kong (75:29) in the Asian Five Nations 2008 was played on May 18 in the Niigata stadium. In 2009, the former Niigata Stadium hosted the 64th National Sports Festival of Japan . The stadium is also used as a concert arena.
