Niklas Willén

Niklas Willén (* 1961 ) is a Swedish conductor .

Life

He studied with Kjell Ingebretsen and Jorma Panula at the Royal Music Academy in Stockholm , where he also took composition lessons from Ingvar Karkhoff and Daniel Börtz . It made its debut in 1988.

From 1993 to 1997 he was chief conductor of the Nordic Chamber Orchestra in Sweden, from 2002 to 2006 chief conductor of the Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester in Denmark . From 2009 to 2011 Niklas Willén was general music director at the Volkstheater Rostock and at the same time chief conductor of the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock . On September 1, 2010, he took over the position of chief conductor of the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln for three years .

Niklas Willén works regularly with the major Scandinavian orchestras and gives guest appearances with other European orchestras. He was also able to make a name for himself as an opera conductor. His interest in contemporary music is evident in numerous world premieres, such as Peter Bengtson's opera The Maiden at the Royal Opera. Numerous productions are documented on CD by BIS and NAXOS , among others .
