North German Philharmonic Rostock
The Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock is the largest orchestra in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the orchestra of the Rostock Volkstheater .
history
The North German Philharmonic Rostock looks back on over a hundred years of history. In 1897 the Leipzig conductor Heinrich Schulz was commissioned as music director of the city of Rostock to found an orchestra of at least 34 well-trained musicians. On September 22, 1897, under his direction, the founding concert of this orchestra was performed in Rostock's Apollo Hall, including Les Preludes by Franz Liszt and the Symphony No. 8 by Ludwig van Beethoven . In addition to its own concert series, the ensemble has also been responsible for the city's theater orchestra since its foundation and was responsible for the spa music in Warnemünde until the 1940s . After a very eventful history, Gerd Puls in particular shaped the development of the orchestra in the post-war period. During his 34 years as general music director he led his orchestra to the status of A-orchestra in 1972 and when he passed the baton to Michael Zilm in 1991, the orchestra consisted of 90 musicians. His successor was able to take over a large symphony orchestra with which he was able to perform all of Gustav Mahler's orchestral works in a Mahler cycle . The works of the composers Arnold Schönberg , Paul Hindemith and Alban Berg formed further programmatic focal points in the nineties . After Michael Zilm's general music directors, Michail Jurowski , Wolf-Dieter Hauschild (since then honorary conductor of the North German Philharmonic Rostock), Peter Leonard and Niklas Willén , Florian Krumpöck has been a young conductor and pianist of the orchestra and folk theater since 2011 . The orchestra has been threatened again and again in recent times by austerity measures by the city of Rostock and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
