Life

Portrait of Kuznetsov by Viktor Vasnetsov (1884)

The son of a wealthy landowner, he started school in Odessa , where his artistic talent was discovered. He took lessons at the local drawing school. From 1876 to 1880, he attended the Imperial Russian Academy of Arts, where he studied with Pavel Chistjakov . He was thought to be a good student, although he often left the academy to paint in his family lands. At the time, he defied his family's wishes by marrying a working class woman who was employed there.

After graduating from high school, he exhibited frequently in Russia and Ukraine and received numerous painting assignments. Among those portrayed by him were Pyotr Tchaikowsky and Ilya Ilyich Metschnikow . During this time he frequently visited the Abramtsevo colony . He was often a model for other painters because of his tall, powerful stature.

After an accident in 1889, he was dependent on crutches, so from then on he only worked in a studio on his country estate, which developed into a meeting place for the creative society. Fyodor Chaliapin was among the guests . In 1893, after a partial recovery, he moved his studio to Odessa and exhibited. Two years later he was offered a professorship at the Imperialist Academy, where he taught battle painting. In 1897 he returned to Odessa. In 1900 he became a member of the Academy and a member of the Peredwischniki . In the same year he exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition . He later traveled extensively to other exhibitions in Europe.

When the White Army retreated during the Russian Civil War in 1920, he emigrated with his family to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, most recently living in Sarajevo, where he died in 1929.

His daughter was the opera singer Maria Nikolajewna Kuznetsova-Benois .
