Nikolai Gennadjewitsch Kasnakow ( Russian Николай Геннадиевич Казнаков or Russian Николай Геннадьевич Казнаков ; born August 8 . Jul / 20th August  1824 greg. , † February 12 jul. / 24. February  1885 greg. ) Was a Russian general of infantry, Governor of Kiev and Governor General of West Siberia .

Kasnakov held the position of governor of Kiev from 1864 to 1866 . In January 1872 he was appointed a member of the Supreme Committee on the Military and Prisons of Western Siberia and commander of the forces of the Western Siberian Military District. From January 1, 1875 to February 19, 1882 he was Governor General of Western Siberia . During his tenure as governor general, he paid great attention to the economic development of his district. He got involved in the discussions about the possible route of a trans-Siberian traffic route and set up regular steamboat traffic on the Irtysh between Semipalatinsk and Tyumen .

Numerous educational institutions in Siberia or their predecessor institutions also go back to Kasnakow. Among other things, he set up a secondary school in Tyumen, the boys' grammar school and the veterans' school in Omsk , boarding schools for Kyrgyz boys in Petropavlovsk and Kokshetau , a field scissors' school in Tobolsk , the Chamber for State Property of Western Siberia and the Statistical Committee of Semipalatinsk. He also promoted the idea of ​​a Siberian university .

Kaznakov was an honorary member of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society , whose Omsk branch was founded in 1877 on his orders. Kasnakov provided financial support to numerous explorers, including the expeditions of Mikhail Wassiljewitsch Pewzow to Mongolia , Nikolai Michailowitsch Jadrinzew to the Altai , Nikolai Nikanorowitsch Balkashin to Turkestan or Ivan Jakowlewitsch Slowzow to Kökschetau.

In 1880 Kaznakov was appointed a member of the State Council. He was also an honorary member of the Kiev Brotherhood of St. Vladimir and holder of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky .
