Nikolai Grigoryevich Sergeyev

Nikolai Grigorjewitsch Sergejew ( Russian: Николай Григорьевич Сергеев , scientific transliteration Nikolaj Grigor'evič Sergeev ; born September 15, 1876 in Saint Petersburg ; † June 23, 1951 in Nice ) was a Russian ballet dancer .

Life

Sergejew received his training at the imperial ballet school in St. Petersburg and from 1894 was a dancer in the ballet ensemble of the Mariinsky Theater . He developed into a solo dancer and soon shows his choreographic talent. From 1904 Sergejew, who led an authoritarian regime, was director and from 1914 main director of the ensemble. By 1918 he created the choreographies for 21 ballet pieces in Stepanov notation.

With his productions of La Fille mal gardée , Swan Lake , The Nutcracker , Snow White , Dry Rose , Giselle and Coppélia , created after 1921 , he also became known in Western Europe, where he lived after the October Revolution. Sergeev has written choreographies for Dyagilev's Ballets Russes , Markova-Dolin Ballet , Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo , the Metropolitan Opera Ballet , Sadler's Wells Ballet and the International Ballet .

He handed over his work to Mona Inglesby ; today the notations are in the collection of the Harvard Theater Collection.
