Nikolai Leopoldowitsch Korschenewski
Nikolai Leopoldovich Korschenewski ( Russian Николай Леопольдович Корженевский , scientific. Transliteration Nikolaj Leopol'dovič Korženevskij ; February 6 * . Jul / 18th February 1879 greg. In Sawereschje, Vitebsk , Russian Empire ; † 31 October 1958 in Tashkent , Uzbek SSR ) was a Russian or Soviet geographer , glaciologist and explorer .
Life
Nikolai Korschenewski was born in the village of Saverezhye in what was then Vitebsk Governorate (now Pskov Oblast ). After finishing school in Kostroma and military training in Kiev , Korschenewski came to Russian Central Asia for the first time in 1903 . Expeditions to the Pamirs and Tian Shan were carried out almost every year up to 1914 , the course and results of which he recorded in extensive diaries.
From 1914 to 1916 Korschenewski fought on the Russian Western Front in World War I , in 1917 he returned to what was then Skobelew (now Fargʻona ). In the Russian Civil War he sided with the "Reds" and in 1920 took a high position on the staff of the Turkestan Front under Mikhail Frunze .
After the end of the war, Korschenewski devoted himself again to scientific activity, undertook further expeditions to the Pamirs in the 1920s, received a doctorate in geography in 1937 and took over the chair of physical geography at the Central Asian University in Tashkent . In 1939 he was named “Honored Scientist of the Uzbek SSR ” and in 1947 a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR.
In total, Korschenewski discovered or researched 70 larger glaciers and a number of mountain peaks. In 1930 he compiled a "Catalog of Central Asia Glaciers". He named the third highest peak of the Tajik Pamir, which he discovered and measured , Pik Korschenewskaja , after his wife and companion on expeditions Evgenija Sergejewna Korschenewskaja.
Three glaciers (in the Trans-Alai chain of the Pamir, in the Kokschal-Too chain of the Tian Shan and in the Transili-Alatau ) and a summit in the Trans-Alai were named after Korschenewski .
