Nikolai Grizenko ( Russian: Николай Олимпиевич Гриценко ; born July 24, 1912 in Jassynuwata , Russian Empire (today: Ukraine ), † December 8, 1979 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet film and theater actor.

life and work

Nikolai Grizenko was born in 1912 in the city of Jassynuwata in what is now Ukraine. In 1931 he finished his studies at the Dnepropetrovsk Technical School, then worked in various cities when he got a job in the technical department of a metallurgical plant in Makiyivka . There he came into contact with the theater and trained as an actor at the local theater faculty. In 1934 he attended the drama school in Kiev, two years later the theater school of the Red Army until he finished his training at the Shchukin drama school in 1940. He then became a member of the Moscow Vakhtangov Theater ensemble, of which he was a member until his death. He became a renowned character actor in the theater and later in film, where he made his debut in July Raisman's literary adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's Maschenka in 1942 .

His best-known films include the Alexei Tolstoy trilogy The Path of Sorrows and the film Anna Karenina based on Leo Tolstoy . He played his last role in the Soviet film adaptation of Father Sergei in 1978 , when, suffering from a serious illness and memory loss, he was struggling to finish shooting.
