occupation

Sannikov-Land (OT: Russian Земля Санникова , transcribed Zemlya Sannikova ) is a Soviet science fiction film from 1973 based on the novel by Vladimir Obruchev .

action

The film takes place in the last years of the Tsarist era . The student Alexander Ilyin persuades the wealthy Trifon Perfiljew to undertake an expedition to the legendary Sannikow country. This region, located in the far north of Russia (in the Arctic) and still free of ice, is said to be rich in mineral resources, especially gold. A team is put together, including Ignati - a servant of Perfiliev and hired murderer who is supposed to kill everyone else if gold is actually found.

After great exertion in the eternal ice , the expedition actually reached an ice-free land in which plants grow, animals and people live: the tribe of the Onkilonen. Volcanic hot springs are responsible for the fact that there is neither ice nor snow in Sannikow Land and that there is tropical warmth. The initially suspicious onkilones gradually become friends with the men of the expedition, and one even begins a relationship with a girl from the tribe. All of this is viewed with suspicion by the onkilone shaman, who sees his position of power in Sannikow land threatened by the foreigners. In one of the resulting conflicts, Ignati shoots into the air, destroying the fragile balance of volcanic forces - he triggers an earthquake that causes all volcanic springs to dry up.

Sannikow Land is doomed because the Arctic ice is taking back what the hot springs have withheld for so long. While some of the expedition members stay behind with the Onkilones to help them fight the cold, only Ilyin gets back to the mainland, where he is rescued by Yakut hunters, completely exhausted , and can tell his story. But because the First World War breaks out, no one follows his report, and the rescue expedition he has planned for the Onkilones never leaves.

Remarks

  • The real basis is the travel reports of Jakow Sannikow and Matwei Gedenstrom , who believed to have discovered the island of Sannikow-Land in 1810 .
  • The film also ran under the titles A gejzírvölgy titka (in Hungary), Salattu maa (in Finland), The Land of Sannikov (video in Greece) and internationally as The Sannikov Land .
  • Originally Vladimir Vysotsky was supposed to play one of the leading roles and had already written and recorded several songs for the film; for political reasons (the Deutsche Welle played his music and made him known as a dissident ) he was thrown out of the project.
  • The nature shots of the film were taken on Kamchatka .
  • The number of viewers in the Soviet Union by 1974 was 41 million.
