Nikolai Toporkoff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolai Toporkoff , out under Nicolas Toporkoff , ( Russian Николай Павлович Топорков ; born June 8 jul. / 20th June  1885 greg. In Moscow ; † 20th June 1965 in Cannes , France ) was a Russian cameraman at local, German and french film.

Life

Toporkoff had stayed abroad until he was 25 and received practical training as a cameraman there. In 1910 he was taken over by the French film company Gaumont and used as a newsreel cameraman in his native Russia. Toporkoff remained active in this field of activity until the outbreak of World War I , when he switched to feature films. Toporkoff brought in a number of central directors of the Tsarist era for their productions, including Yevgeny Bauer and Jakow Protasanow .

In 1919, at the time of the civil war in Russia, Toporkoff followed the general exodus of Russian film artists towards Western Europe and settled in France. In Paris he joined the Belarusian émigré circles and the Albatros Film production company they founded and photographed primarily the productions of Russian exile directors such as Alexander Wolkoff , Viktor Tourjansky , Nikolai Malikoff , Vladimir Strijewski and Fedor Ozep . Toporkoff, who changed his first name to a francophone Nicolas in Paris, worked regularly on the films with Ivan Mosjukin , the most popular actor in the Tsarist empire, until 1931 ; also when he was behind the camera in Berlin studios during the last years of silent film, from 1927 to 1930.

“From an artistic point of view, Toporkoff films were rather poor in meaning, since the late 30s he was almost only involved in second- and third-rate productions.” Nikolai / Nicolas Toporkoff died on his 80th birthday.
