Nicolai Abildgaard
Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (born September 11, 1743 in Copenhagen , † June 4, 1809 in Frederiksdal) was a Danish painter , sculptor and architect of the neoclassical period .
Life
Abildgaard, son of the draftsman, illustrator and naturalist Søren Abildgaard (1718–1791), who especially made drawings based on natural and architectural monuments, studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1764 to 1772 , received their travel grant in 1771, went to Rome in 1772 and went to on his return in 1777 professor, 1789 director of the academy. His main works, a cycle of historical allegorical pictures in the castle at Christiansburg , were all destroyed by fire in 1794. He also painted scenes from Ossian and Shakespeare and four pictures from Andria des Terenz (on display in the State Art Museum in Copenhagen ). As he also modeled and practically worked as an ornamentist, the young Bertel Thorvaldsen began his artistic career under him. Abildgaard is buried in the Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro, Copenhagen.
