Statens Museum for Art
The Danish national gallery Statens Museum for Kunst ( German State Art Museum ) is the largest museum for fine arts in Denmark and is located in the center of the capital Copenhagen . It is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture .

The museum designed by the architect Vilhelm Dahlerup (1836–1907) was opened in 1897. In 1998 the main building was complemented by an extension by the architect Anna Maria Indrio (* 1943).
collection
In addition to changing temporary exhibitions, there is also a comprehensive collection that consists of three main collections:
- The Royal Collection of Paintings and Sculptures, which includes around 2600 works from 1300 to the present day. One focus of the collection is Danish and Nordic art from 1750 to 1900, including numerous works of art from the Golden Age of Danish painting by painters such as Wilhelm Bendz , Detlev Conrad Blunck , Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg , Constantin Hansen , Christen Købke , Vilhelm Marstrand and Martinus Rørbye as well as Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann, who temporarily worked in Denmark . The collection also includes works by Titian and Mantegna , Rubens and Rembrandt and Cornelis Gijsbrechts, as well as by Henri Matisse , Edvard Munch , Emil Nolde and Robert Smithson . But it also includes modern contemporary works by Danes Asger Jorn , Per Kirkeby , Elmgreen and Dragset and Danh Vō .
- The Royal Copper Engraving Collection comprises 300,000 works ( drawings , lithographs , etchings and other art forms on paper) by Danish and international artists.
- The cast collection ( Den Kongelige Afstøbningssamling ) comprises over 2,000 plaster casts and has been housed in a historic packing house ( Vestindisk Pakhus , Toldbodgade 40) since 1984 . The represented works go back to ancient Egypt. To save money, the cast collection is only open on Tuesdays and Sunday afternoons.
