Wilhelm Ferdinand Bendz (born March 20, 1804 in Odense , † November 14, 1832 in Vicenza ) was a Danish painter who became known as a genre and portrait painter of the Golden Age of Denmark . Despite his short life, his work is extremely innovative and, unlike that of his fellow students at the Danish Academy, probably influenced decisively by the German painting of his time - especially by Johann Erdmann Hummel .

Life

Wilhelm Bendz began his studies at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen in 1820, initially in architecture. In 1822 he was a private student of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and strove to combine portrait , genre and history painting . Dramatic lighting effects and the playful, self-ironic examination of his own artistic community characterize his work. In the academy competition he received the silver medal. After graduation, he did not take any painting classes for four years. On his trip to the south, he made a one-year stop in Munich . He died of pneumonia during his first trip to Italy at the age of 28.
