Nikolaj Edinger Ball

Nikolaj Edinger Balle (born April 12, 1839 in Olstrup , † November 13, 1900 in Nuuk ) was a Danish missionary in Greenland and university director .

Life

Nikolaj Edinger Balle was the son of Pastor Johannes Peter Ovesen Balle (1810–1879) and his wife Nancy Henriette Jacobine Schack (1815–1986). He was a great-grandson of the bishop and namesake Nicolai Edinger Balle (1744-1816). His career aspiration to become a Greenland missionary was clear to him early on. He became a student in 1858 and graduated from theology in 1864. During his student days he was influenced by Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig . In 1865 he was appointed an ordained teacher at Ajoqersuivissuaq , the seminary in Ilulissat . In 1867 he became a missionary to Uummannaq , but continued to live in Ilulissat. In 1869 he was appointed deputy director of the Ajoqersuivissuaq before becoming a missionary and director of the Ilinniarfissuaq in Nuuk the following year . He stayed there for 30 years until his death and thus shaped an entire generation of Greenland missionaries and catechists.

Nikolaj Edinger Balle married on April 12, 1869 in Ilulissat Kathrine Justine Fleischer (1849–1918), daughter of the colonial administrator Knud Geelmuyden Fleischer (1815–1877) and his wife Regine Magdalene Paulussen (1816–1889). The sons Frederik Balle (1871-1939) and Knud Balle (1877-1928) emerged from the marriage. Nikolaj Edinger Balle was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order in 1895 .
