Adam Richard Ernst von Gernet (born August 7, 1878 in Kiwidipäh ( Estonia ), † July 1, 1944 in Hamburg ) was a German-Baltic baron , geodesist , hydrograph and naval officer .

Life

Adam von Genet attended school in Lübeck and then studied at the Technical University in Karlsruhe . In 1897 he joined as a volunteer in the 90th Infantry - Regiment and was in 1898 as a commissioned officer in the Army - Reserve added. As a reservist, he achieved the highest rank of sergeant-major . After studying in Lübeck and Karlsruhe, he was accepted into the Imperial Russian Navy in 1901 as a flag boy . He experienced his first war mission from 1904 in the Japanese-Russian War . From 1904 to 1905 he was on the destroyer Vigorous , then watch commander on the cruiser Dmitry Donskoy and took part in the sea ​​battle at Tsushima . In 1905 Gernet was briefly captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war . In 1918 he was deported to Siberia , after a short imprisonment he was released and joined the Baltic regiment in the same year . Until 1922 he was the leader of the ice sail department on Lake Peipus and then served as a geodesist in the topo-hydrographic department of the Estonian General Staff . He was then head of magnetic surveying on the mainland and in Estonia's waters. Gernet worked on the magnet-free survey ship Cecilie , which he designed and worked for Finland , Sweden , Latvia , Lithuania and Germany , among others . In 1920 he was promoted to lieutenant commander and in 1927 in the militia . From 1934 he worked as a surveyor in the headquarters of the defense and from 1935 gave courses in topo-hydrography as a teacher. He expanded his non-magnetic schooner Cecilie , on which he precisely measured the magnetic declination in the North and Baltic Seas. In November 1939 he left the Baltic States and worked at the Deutsche Seewarte in Hamburg.

Origin and family

Adam von Gernet came from the German-Baltic noble family von Gernet from the Neuenhof family. His father was the district councilor Magnus Friedrich von Gernet (1824-1909), who with Helene Amalie Katharina (Kitty) von Grünewaldt (1833-1909). was married. His brother was Adolph von Gernet (1863–1942). Adam vG married Margarethe Baronesse von Maydell (* 1882) in 1906 . Her descendants were Katharina Charlotte von Gernet (* 1909) and Axel Friedrich von Gernet (* 1914).
