Nikolaj Villumsen (born February 28, 1983 in Aarhus ) is a Danish politician ( Enhedslisten ). From 2011 to 2019 Villumsen was a member of the Folketing . Since the European elections in 2019 , Villumsen has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left .

Life

Youth and education

Nikolaj Villumsen was born on February 28, 1983 in the Jutland city ​​of Aarhus and grew up there. He completed his school education at Sølystskolen and Risskov-Gymnasium in Aarhus until 2003 , then from 2003 to 2004 he did a voluntary service at the student development cooperation Operation Dagsværk . From 2004 to 2008 Villumsen worked as a health care worker. At the same time, he began studying history at the University of Copenhagen in 2005 , which he graduated in 2009.

In 2007/08 Villumsen was a research associate for Dansk Folkemindesamling , after which he completed an internship with the Danish MEP Søren Søndergaard ( Folkebevægelsen mod EU ). Then Villumsen worked temporarily for the Københavns Museum and the Danish Student Council.

Villumsen has been politically active since his youth. In the meantime he belonged to the leadership of the Socialistisk UngdomsFront , a youth organization that is close to the Enhedslisten . In 2000 he joined the Enhedslisten party, in 2008 the member elected him to the board. Parallel to his commitment to the Enhedslisten, Villumsen was also a member of the board of the Folkebevægelsen mod EU from 2008 to 2010 . In 2009 Villumsen was one of the organizers of the big demonstration at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen .

In the 2011 Folketing election , he won a mandate for the Enhedslisten in the Seeland constituency, which he represented until 2015. In the 2015 Folketing Election he ran in East Jutland and won another mandate for the Enhedslisten. According to his own information, during his time in the Folketing the focus was mainly on defense, foreign and European policy, as well as human rights. As a Folketing member, Villumsen was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

For the European elections in 2019 , the Enhedslisten decided not to support the sister party Folkebevægelsen mod EU , but to run for the first time. The party voted Villumsen first on the list. In the elections, the Enhedslisten won 5.5 percent and thus one of the 14 Danish seats. Villumsen gave up his mandate in the Folketing and moved to the European Parliament, where he joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . He is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs for the political group and a deputy member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety .

Private

Villumsen lives with his partner in Herlev and has a daughter.
