Nikolaus Andreas Reinhart (born September 2, 1809 in Mainz , † November 14, 1871 in Worms ) was a Hessian entrepreneur.

Life and work

Reinhart was born in Mainz and learned the trade of tanner in Worms . In 1836 he acquired based in Worms tannery Daniel Loeb and established in connection with the Privy Councilor of Commerce Johann Baptist Doerr the Lederwerke Doerr & Reinhart .

In 1848 the tannery and the leather works were merged. In 1850, the company he founded began exporting its products to North and South America as well as Australia. The export share was up to 80% of the manufactured goods. In 1851 the first steam engine was built under his direction and in 1852 a sickness and death benefit fund was set up for employees.

With the founding of the leather works, a competition arose to the already existing leather works Heyl'sche Lederwerke ; together over 9,000 people were employed. As a result, a connubium developed within the founding families of Doerr and Reinhart .

The company founded by Reinhart and Doerr later took on a pioneering role in society by offering a company canteen and other social benefits in addition to the sickness and death benefit already mentioned.

Reinhart's son was Nikolaus Andreas Reinhart , born in Worms in 1841 and who continued the company in 1871.
