Nikolaus Gerhart

Nikolaus Gerhart (born November 30, 1944 in Starnberg ) is a German sculptor.

Life

Gerhart initially trained as a stonemason and stone sculptor. From 1969 to 1975 he then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Since 1998 he has held a professorship for sculpture there and from 2004 to March 2010 he was its rector and president. In 2008, together with Walter Grasskamp and Florian Matzner, he was the author of the extensive publication 200 Years of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich .

In each of his works Gerhart tries to make a certain property of the material stone tangible for the observer.

Gerhart is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the German Association of Artists . He lives and works in Munich.
