Nicholas I of Gutenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus I von Gutenburg (* after 1300; † March 5, 1364 in Einsiedeln ) was the 25th abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Einsiedeln .

Life

Nikolaus von Gutenburg came from the family of the Barons von Gutenburg , whose ancestral seat was probably the Gutenburg in the municipality of Madiswil , district of Gutenburg (Canton Bern, Switzerland). Nikolaus himself came from a branch of the family to which the Gutenburg in Schlüchttal belonged (today the town of Waldshut-Tiengen ). The successor of the father Walther went to the older brother Hugo.

Nikolaus von Gutenburg is documented as a monk of the Reichenau monastery from 1328 and last held the function of custodian or provost there. After Heinrich von Brandis was elected Bishop of Constance , Nikolaus von Gutenburg was elected by Pope Innocent VI on December 22, 1357 . designated as Heinrich's successor. Nikolaus von Gutenburg could not raise the funds agreed for the appointment for the apostolic see and was therefore initially suspended, excommunicated and became irregular. An interdict was imposed on the pen . It was not until the end of 1359 that Nikolaus von Gutenburg could compare himself to the apostolic chair.

Despite the precarious financial situation of the monastery, he was able to set up a hospital in Einsiedeln in 1361 .

Nikolaus von Gutenburg died on March 5, 1364 after reigning in a period of peace.
