Nikolaus Walter Schües (born February 2, 1936 in Hamburg ) is a German shipowner .

Nikolaus W. Schües comes from a Reformed family who immigrated to Hamburg from Urnäsch in 1665 . The son of insurance salesman and entrepreneur Walter Georg Schües attended the Louisenlund boarding school for four years and graduated from high school in Altona in 1956 . Then he began an apprenticeship as a shipping merchant who in 1958 with the Hamburg Kaufmannsgehilfenbrief letter of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce completed. Schües then volunteered at shipping companies in London , Dublin and New York .

Professional career

In 1961 he joined the shipping company F. Laeisz , founded in 1824, and in 1973 he became a personally liable partner of the company. As a result of the shipping crisis of 1982, all of F. Laeisz's shipping activities were transferred to a new F. Laeisz Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH + Co. KG in 1983, which Schües founded and managed with the participation of F. Laeisz. After German reunification Schües bought in 1993 together with the Hamburg businessman Horst Rahe by the Treuhandanstalt , the German Seereederei GmbH in Rostock, the former state shipping company of the GDR. From then on, their cargo ships and those of F. Laeisz Schiffahrtsgesellschaft drove for the F. Laeisz shipping company, which has been the sole property of the Schües family since 1999. In 2004, Schües, together with his son Nikolaus H. Schües, also took over the F. Laeisz holding company, under whose roof he now operates a shipping, trading, insurance and service group, which essentially includes the companies F. Laeisz GmbH, Reederei F. Laeisz GmbH, F. Laeisz Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH + Co. KG, F. Laeisz Versicherung AG, "Nikolai" Assecuranz GmbH, African Frucht-Compagnie GmbH , Martini Chartering GmbH, Trailer Lloyd Fahrzeugvermietung GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburgische Seehlassung Gesellschaft für Schiffsbeteiligungen mbH & Co. KG and Hamburgische Energiehandlung GmbH belong. In 2005 Schües handed over the management to his son Nikolaus H. Schües.

Volunteering

From 1974 to 1977 Schües was chairman of the Hamburg Nautical Association , from 1978 to the end of 1980 chairman of the Association of German Shipowners , of which he was a member of the board of directors until 1996. Since 1986 he has been a member of the plenary session of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce ; In 1990 he was elected Vice-President and Chairman of the Committee on Home Affairs and in May 1996 President of the Chamber. After the maximum term of office of a President, Nikolaus W. Schües was re-elected as Vice President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce from 2002 to 2005. From February 1997 to 2005 Schües was Vice President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( DIHK ), from 2005 to 2013 a member of the DIHK Council of Elders. In addition, Schües is a member of a number of supervisory boards and advisory boards of companies as well as voluntary bodies in the charitable and cultural sector; u. a. From 2005 to 2011 he was chairman of the Jung Foundation for Science and Research , from 2010 to 2014 of the “Freundeskreis Elbphilharmonie und Laeiszhalle e. Together with his wife he founded the Christa and Nikolaus W. Schües Art Foundation. Schües is a member of the Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg , the board of trustees of the Foundation for the Promotion of Hamburg Art Collections and was a member of the board of trustees of the Hamburg Cultural Foundation . From 2006 to 2010 he was a member of the University Council of the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK).

Nikolaus W. Schües has been married to Christa Schües since 1962; his family includes four grown children and 17 grandchildren. Schües lives in Hamburg-Blankenese .

Honors

In 2001 Schües received the medal for faithful work in the service of the people of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, in 2003 the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Order of Merit and in 2014 the Gustav Schiefler Medal of the Lichtwark Society.
