Nilima Sheikh

Nilima Sheikh (born November 18, 1945 in New Delhi ) is an Indian painter .

life and work

Nilima Sheikh studied history from 1962 to 1965 at the University of Delhi and from 1965 to 1971 painting with KG Subramanyan at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara . From 1977 to 1981 she was professor of painting at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda . She lectures internationally and has traveled widely.

Her painting practice includes hand-painted miniatures and children's book illustrations , paintings and paintings on paper and paper rolls, and several orders for stage sets . "The starting point for Sheikh's work are figurative forms of representation such as miniature paintings, Pichwai cloth paintings, hand-stenciled landscape motifs, folk tales, illustrated handbooks from the colonial era, the writings of Kashmiri poets and historians as well as the voices of Sufi mystics on their journey through a troubled country."

In 1987 Sheikh exhibited with Arpita Singh , Nalini Malani and Madhvi Parekh . Numerous exhibitions in India, but also internationally, were organized for them. In 2014 the solo exhibition Each Night Put Kashmir in Your Dreams took place at the Art Institute of Chicago . In 2017, Sheikh was invited to take part in documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens.
