Nils Bielke , German also Nikolaus von Bielke , Italian Nicolò Bielke (born January 17, 1706 in Stockholm , † June 12, 1765 in Rome ) was a Swedish count. After his conversion to the Roman Catholic Church, he became papal chamberlain and Senatore di Roma .

Life

Nils Bielke came from the old Swedish nobility Bielke . He was the eldest son of the Swedish officer and envoy Imperial Count Carl Gustaf Bielke and his wife Brita Sofia Horn von Marienborg.

He grew up in Paris , where his father was the Swedish ambassador to the French court. At the age of 16 he was appointed chamberlain . In 1731 he converted to the Roman Catholic Church in Strasbourg . Naturalized in France , he went to Rome . Here he was received with great honor. In 1735 he became papal chamberlain. Two years later Pope Clement XII appointed him . to the Senatore di Roma . This was largely a ceremonial office - but the highest that a lay person could achieve in the Papal States. In 1740 he became a knight of the Order of Malta .

He was married to Hedvig Elisabet Sack (1708-1760), a daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Carl Filip Sack and Countess Christina Beata Lillie , from 1727 . However, he had to leave her behind in Sweden when he converted and could only correspond with her by letter. The couple remained childless.

His elaborate tomb, which his friend the Cardinal Antonio Casali had placed for him in 1768, can be found in the Swedish national church in Rome Santa Brigida .
