Nina Hagen Band is the debut album of the band of the same name with Nina Hagen .

background

The album was created after Hagen got together with the musicians Herwig Mitteregger , Reinhold Heil , Bernhard Potschka and Manfred Praeker in 1977 after moving from East to West Berlin (with a short interlude in Great Britain ) and founded the band. It received mostly positive reviews in the music press and is considered a major album of German rock music. Many refer to it as an impetus for the later creation of the Neue Deutsche Welle .

The album is characterized by elaborate production and musical styles that change from piece to piece. TV-Glotzer (a cover version of the song White Punks On Dope by The Tubes , which received a new German text from Hagen) and Auf'm Bahnhof Zoo contain elements of rock 'n' roll , hot is a reggae piece, pank a fast punk number and the songs Naturträne and Der Spinner are slow rock ballads that appear exaggerated in the grotesque by Nina Hagen's shrill, sometimes operatic voice. All texts were written by Nina Hagen herself and stand out due to their bizarre and sometimes provocative choice of words. Some of the songs included caused controversy in the German-speaking media world. In the text of Indescribable Feminine , Nina Hagen advocates abortion , in Auf'm Bahnhof Zoo she describes a lesbian encounter in a ladies' room, and in the piece Pank she sings the line “I'm not your fucking machine, squirt-squirt, that's it Joke".

The photo on the front of the album cover was taken by the photographer and manager of the Nina Hagen band, Jim Rakete . It shows a colored black and white portrait of Nina Hagen with a cigarette between her lips. The rest of the volume is shown on the back of the album cover, behind which a poster of the cover photo hangs on a wall. Friedhelm Meinaß was responsible for the cover design.

In 2019, the online platform laut.de dedicated an article to Nina Hagen Band in its "Milestones" section, which is reserved for album classics that "[regardless of] genre assignments ... every music fan must have heard". The album is described as a " monolithic reference work, steaming with zeitgeist , hysterical, over-the-top and always worth rediscovering, as historic and style-defining as Lindenberg's thumb in the wind , Ton Steine Scherbens No power for nobody and Dicke von Westernhagen ". The texts by Nina Hagen Band have "lost little of their topicality in their hunger for freedom and the demand for equal rights".
